WELCOME
I’m Carmen Wakeford.
I’m an artist living and working in Johannesburg, South
Africa.
My work has changed considerably over the years, as I think
any creative practice should. I started with photomontage, moved through
different forms of digital image-making and eventually found myself wanting to
simplify my visual ideas and render them in a more distilled way. And that is
where my work is now.
I work digitally with a drawing pad and stylus, building
images through form and colour, creating compositions from something I've
noticed and can't quite let go of.
I'm drawn to nature, landscape, animals, colour and the
strange beauty of things that don't always make sense at first glance.
And, inevitably, I'm drawn to Africa. Its extraordinary
visual richness continually finds its way into my work.
I don't think I have a fixed style. I've never been
particularly interested in staying in one. What interests me is seeing where
the work goes next. And lately, that has led me increasingly towards the
relationship between artwork and the spaces we live in.
The relationship between art, colour, interiors and the things we choose to live with has become a big part of what I currently explore.
Here, alongside my artwork, I'll be sharing the things that inspire me, my thoughts on interiors and colour, my relationship with the South African landscape, and the ideas that continue to influence the work I make.
So, welcome, and I hope you find something that makes you
stop, think, look twice or perhaps see your own space a little differently.

At studio scale, the work carries narrative detail, birds in motion, wildlife in transition, shifting terrain. When adapted to full wall scale, those element reorganise spatially. The sweeping horizon lines, open sky and bold foreground forms create distinct visual zones that hold their own across a large architectural plane.

On a more personal level it’s an evolution of inner power, a step closer to my understanding of appreciation. True beauty is much more than we see. And when we experience it within our being, at core level, its capacity has the most profound effect on us. It’s an elemental experience, like the wind sweeping back your hair and caressing your skin. It creates sensations that lift your spirit to new heights and elicits a feeling of being one with nature. Flight between Turmoil and Grace is an artwork that honours this experience, of personal transcendence.
