Belly to the Sun II, with its radiant red backdrop and a single coral tree flower blooming tall captures three zebras caught in poses of calm, comfort, and release. One stands, while another lies curled in repose, as the third is dramatically sprawled on its back, legs and hooves suspended in joy or abandon. The environment is abstract though distinctly Southern African. I was drawn to this pose as it carries a quiet boldness, an unapologetic ease. To lie belly-up in the sun is to expose one’s most vulnerable self in complete trust. It’s an act of connection to self and to land.
